About strays and an Isle of Dogs

 I love my cat.₊˚⊹ ᰔ

Unfortunately I can't see her too often since moving away from home. She's an almost 17 year old princess and I've had her around since I can remember so it's pretty rough sometimes not being able to pet her or talk to her. So I decided that I needed to find a way to be surrounded by cats when I'm not at home with her.

I started working at the Berlin shelter in the cat house voluntarily the fall of last year and I've been there a couple of times since. The path there takes estimated 1.5 hours there and 1.5 hours back, so I always get up early in the day to be on time and start "work" at 8 am sharp. Honestly, every time I wake up early, the sun is still sleeping, and I wonder why I even decided to do it. But I still get up and ready, read, knit or write on my way there and help the workers by cleaning the cages before I get to pet some of the adorable sweet kitties that unfortunately haven't found their forever home yet!

It's a lot of work, and I'm always exhausted afterwards, but every time I finish my "shift", I feel grateful and happy about going out of my way to help the cats and also myself! By going to the shelter, I push myself to take this time for myself, and for things/animals I love. Of course, it feels good knowing I have been a helping hand for workers and these animals, but these cats have given me so much love back, that I feel like they help me just as much.

One day I'll take one post to just introduce and talk about the cats I've spent most time with in my shelter days, since I remember their names and take pictures of them regularly. But this is not what I wanted to write about today.

After the shelter, I met up with my boyfriend in the city to grab some lunch and check out our favourite bookstore when we spotted this book called 'Accidentally Wes Anderson' by Wally Koval which inspired us to watch this night's movie:

The Isle of Dogs

As the synopsis summarises it: "When, by executive decree, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island, 12-year-old Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard-dog, Spots. There, with the assistance of a pack of newly-found mongrel friends, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture."*

It's a witty, detail packed, beautifully animated, and overall well made stop-motion-movie which is a must watch, whether you like Wes Anderson as a director or not. The animation is gorgeous, and you can just see how much effort and love was poured into this movie. I would consider stop motion the hardest form of animation, and the fact that this movie wouldn't feel the same if it wasn't in stop motion just drives home the point of how beautiful the world these people made is. If you pause at any moment in the movie, you get a wonderful piece of art.

My boyfriend and I giggled a lot about small jokes in the movie and were fascinated by the storytelling through pictures and the mix of different art styles. I would put Fantastic Mr. Fox as my favourite movie and even though this one won't replace the first place, it's was beautiful all within and we had a great time watching it!

The only thing I don't agree with is, that cats and dogs themselves aren't able to coexist in this city and its community which is obviously based on stereotypes, propaganda and the general question between being a cat or dog person, but I personally would have appreciated an ending, that shows the animals actually living together now that the people spreading propaganda are locked away. Not sure if you can even call that criticism, though, since Wes Anderson just played with stereotypes that everyone knows and had a different focus for this movie! :D

My day started and ended with strays and - hopefully - all of them finding their happy ending.. If I had any questions about why I'm making all the efforts to helping out the shelter until this evening, they definitely got answered with this movie! Every animal deserves a home that takes care of it and shows it love and while I can't be that home to any of these cats, I can help them on their way and take away some of their fear.

I'm grateful my cat at home has my family to take care of her and will forever have this home, and I'll continue to give her all my love whenever I can!
